Our strengths

Five areas where we are genuinely world class

We do not pretend to lead in everything. These five areas concentrate two thirds of our research funding, our doctoral studentships and our capital investment, and they are assessed by external panels every three years.

Three things that left the building

Research only counts when somebody outside the university uses it.

Clean water for less

A graphene membrane developed here removes heavy metals at a fifth of the cost of commercial systems. Three water authorities are running field trials.

Catching sepsis earlier

An algorithm built with our partner hospital flags deterioration two hours earlier than standard observation charts, and is now used in nine wards.

Heat without gas

Our geothermal retrofit of eleven campus buildings cut heating emissions by 84 per cent and became the template for a national funding programme.

We work with companies, hospitals, charities and government departments, from two-week consultancies to ten-year programmes.

Collaborate on a project

Joint research, co-funded studentships and secondments in both directions. Most partnerships start with a two hour scoping meeting.

Use our facilities

Electron microscopy, high performance computing, the energy test hall and clinical trial support are all available to external users.

License our technology

Our technology transfer office handles 60 active licences and will tell you within a week whether there is something worth talking about.
